Kiyū, the Prostitute
Kiyū was born in Edo as the daughter of town doctor Ōta Shōan. The family was poor due to her father’s illness and Kiyū was distressed by this. To cure his illness, Kiyū sold herself into bondage at Gankirō in Yokohama and used her earnings to afford medication. One night, an American visited Gankirō and attempted to buy Kiyū. Kiyū deplored this and committed suicide, leaving a poem behind. The poem reads,
–Even a dewdrop of rain bothers Japanese prostitutes. I will not let the rain from America wet my sleeves.

娼妓喜遊
喜遊は江戸生まれで、町医者田太田正庵の娘である。父親が病んでいたため家が貧しく、このため、それを悲しみ父の病を治したいと横浜の岩亀楼に身売りをし、その金を父親の医薬に充てた。ある夜、一人のアメリカ人が岩亀楼に上がって喜遊を買おうとした。 喜遊はこれを憤り嘆く余りに和歌を残して自殺したという。 その歌は
〽露をだに 厭ふ日本の 女郎花 ふる亜米利加に 袖はぬらさし
（露にでさえ濡れることを嫌がる女郎花なのだから、降る雨に袖は濡らさない／アメリカ人の客を思って袖を濡らすようなことはしない）
