The tide of street prostitutes has not completely gone. They still occupy corners of our neighbourhood while hiding from the eyes of authorities and are corrupting public morals. This is truly a bitter situation but it is better than letting them sneak in among good families and become more fortified. In fact, the situation has gotten better since the district was established in Alexander Street. Of course, it would have been even better if we had not had either of them. Social evolution is making progress in an ideal manner and civilization has shown its true values with no regret or flaw. We must not permit an intervention of such things when we see the ubiquitous presence of truth, goodness, and beauty in every aspect of the universe. While the world is not carried out in a way that matches this theory or our hopes, if we Japanese are aware of ourselves as civilized people and willing to work hard to achieve the true goals of civilization, we must have a will to advance, step after step, toward the realization of this ideal. In this light, an issue like caves on Alexander Street should not actually require research or anything else. However, our society is not an ideal society. It is questionable whether our civilization has proven its development as it should. In addition, Vancouver is a newly developing city and a port. Some might claim that we can have one or two prostitute caves and, in fact, they would make the city more vibrant. It should not be a problem to say that there are a number of theories and it is difficult to judge their validity.
I just mentioned that the current situation might be better than the time when prostitutes were active and hiding among good families. I would like to get into the actual problems now, that is, what kind of Japanese people venture into Alexander Street today. Our contract worker has done adequate investigation and we have most of the names in our hand. One phenomenon that should not be ignored is that there are a relatively small number of bachelors who frequent the caves. In other words, there are a relatively large number of married people. However, many ill-respected ones tend to be bachelors. For example, there was a man who ordered soba noodle from a Japanese restaurant to a prostitute’s room. The man told the deliverer that he was going to make a payment when the deliverer came back to pick up the containers, and then disappeared. The man did not take the containers fortunately but the restaurant could not do anything about the loss. It is shockingly shameless that the uneducated do such a thing for fun and negatively influence public morals, and this is a phenomenon that we should certainly despise.
