No.27 (April 1, 1912)

Currently, there is no single prostitute cave owned by the Japanese in Edmonton. However, there are many western restaurants where waitresses are all doing the “fuzzy” businesses, which makes the situation the same in the end. These types of western restaurants are currently owned by four men, including Makihara, Asami, Kubota and Ashida. Kigawa quit his business on January 17th of this year. Kagawa has moved from Cranbrook in the spring last year for the purpose of doing a prostitution business. To count prostitutes, who appear as waitresses on the surface, in this city, Asami’s restaurant has his wife Osono, Oume, Matsumoto’s Oshige’s brother’s widow, who has been Nakagawa’s lover, and Oka’s Okimi and Omiki; Kubota’s restaurant has Tsukino’s Kinu, Kumagai’s Nori and Shozo Tsukino’s Taka. The most successful of them all is Asami’s restaurant. In any case, these “western restaurants” all have prostitutes’ rooms, which have two or three entrances and a hole in the wall, behind trunks, so that they are able to escape to other rooms in emergency. These places have all kinds of facilities like these to prepare for police investigations just in case. They charge three dollars for a prostitute but depending on the client’s wish there is an option for overnight stays. This kind of structure is no different from pure prostitute caves.

Police in Edmonton are definitely not unaware of this. Of course, they know of it but they secretly tolerate it. Anyway, the Japanese prostitutes who used to be scattered across the BC interior and parts of Alberta are recently working hard in Edmonton, seeing it as the easiest place to make money. It is inconvenient for us that they are devoting all their efforts into it, but in any case, Edmonton is exhibiting a phenomenon, which cannot be seen in other cities, although we cannot be certain of how long this phenomenon will continue.
