No.25 (December 17, 1908)

Attitude of Police Authority (cont’d)

Police in Cranbrook also have a relatively tolerant attitude. However, unlike Nelson they would not cause trouble for straight business people from outside. Nelson is an exception. However, Cranbrook sometimes has conflicts between caves and straight fellows. This is something that Nelson does not have. It seems the conflicts have faded lately but the situation was terrible around a year or two years ago. There used to be unreasonable requests—“give me drinks, give me money”—which escalated into dramas where tables flip, bottles fly, and sometimes even western knives sparkle. There used to be a man called Masao Tabe, who became a police dog, watching over caves and sometimes made situations convenient for them. This man then made use of his credence and threatened cave fellows with his scary face, “you give me money or I will report your pimp”. Reporting pimps is not a bad idea but the way he dealt with the caves was bad. He lost the police’s trust and ended up being expelled from the town due to one incident. Anyway, whenever there is a conflict between the straight and the cave, police always support brothels and severely punish violent clients. Of course, the violent clients are bad but there is also a rumor that caves bribe the police.

McLean, for example, is a well-known officer.

To summarize, we can conclude that police provide a significant amount of protection in Cranbrook as well. The fines for brothels are not collected through a fake version of the blue paper but there is a set of rates: 15 dollars per month for maddams, 5 dollars per month for prostitutes.

Once there was a climate that favors assigning fines for pimps but it never happened. It is the height of absurdity to tolerate pimps. Such a class absolutely should not exist. Police must have put some consideration into it. The fines for pimps did not come into realization but instead the police are giving a strict attention to them.

Pimps find their place in caves under the name of cooks. In fact, the only work they do there everyday is cooking.

In sum, police in Cranbrook has a tolerant policy though not as tolerant as Nelson, and cave fellows spend days without much worry. However, the situation significantly changes once you step into Alberta.

Why is that?
