Calculation of Interests
Let me say a few words before I move on to this section.
Since we started this series, Exploration of Devil Caves, we have received a mountain of letters from all over the interior regarding the topic, and they are piled up on our desk. We receive at least two or three letters on average every week. Some of them are anonymous and others are signed by a few individuals, but all in all they are consistent in that they have complaints, more or less. However, even these signed letters look suspicious to us as most of them seem to be pseudonyms and they are probably devil fellows. Of course, we do not have time to deal with each of them but these complaints include: there are mistakes in the description of so-and-so’s action X; such action did not take place; or how can you not write about so-and-so. Some letters actually offer new facts, which we were not aware of.
Let me give you an example from recently received letters. This letter is signed by “Cranbrook Sunada.” Its writing is very bad, but to summarize it goes like this: I have been reading your newspaper but you have not touched anything about Itō, Shiraishi, Okimi, Omine, or Osuma in Cranbrook; I would like to hear back from you as soon as you receive this letter; if I do not hear from you, I can visit Vancouver in the spring and meet you at your company; if you want to write about brothels, sooner or later you will have to cover all of them; or, we want to ask, are you selecting information to report based on money offered by your sources?
This is a ridiculous question. How could they possibly imagine that we take money to select our news coverage? He takes a petit person’s outlook to understand others’ mind. If we have any sense of guilt, we would not be able to take a pen to fight with devils in all those places. This fact proves the truth. We are giving lessons to those devil fellows after going through intensive and careful research in all those places. It is too troublesome to deal with such a foolish question. In terms of Itō, Shiraishi, Okimi and Omine, I want him to re-read the series once again carefully. I have already written about Itō, Mr. America or Shiraishi, and their prostitutes. It is ridiculous that he makes such a complaint while he puts his sloppiness aside. In addition, I would like to say that this series has not been finished yet. It is still ongoing and, therefore, it is natural that we go back and forth depending on the ordering of our story and that we still have some individuals yet to be covered. We cannot deal with those requests individually. Meanwhile, I cannot help but be suspicious about the sign “Sunada”.
