I was running my business until nineteen forty, nineteen forty-one. In 1941 I was thrown out with my stuff left behind. They were against (us), they said, because it was a war. The war started in 1941. All my property was thrown away, thrown out, all my belongings and important stock-in-trade were all taken away. Ten thousands of yen of goods were gone. My belonging, kimono, nice kimono and everything were taken to white people’s places. White people have pretty mouths, noses, and faces but their hearts are rotten.
People sang which song? Hotaru no hikari? Not that one. Yes, it is Hotaru no hikari, they sang that song and said good bye. Everybody crying. Those who had a husband were separated and dispersed. Husbands were taken and sent to internment camps.
It was 1941. They came to take me so I hid. I wanted to stay in Vancouver. So I hid in the hotel. Two Mounties and one city soldier, a woman soldier, three of them came to take me. I was caught right when I was asleep. I was put in jail, because I refused to go. Everybody was relocated and had to go. Three dozens of whiskey, six dollars and fifty cents per bottle, three dozens full of my suitcase and then another. These were all taken away. Diamond, rings, and all.
I was put in jail. Put in the corner of the Main Street, and then put in Oakalla, I was. No Japanese person there. I was the only Japanese. Everybody else was of other countries. When the radio talked about Japan I was so frustrated that I stamped my feet in jail. It pissed me off. They say, Jap, Jap, I say, shut up! I have a quick temper, so when somebody says Jap to me it makes my chest upset (with anger). You ketō* shut up! I was mad.
I even said it to a soldier, because he said Jap. Then (the soldier said), how dare you to say such a thing to me. But then, because I had many detective friends, they said to me, ok, Mama, be very careful, don’t say that. They were on my side. Soon you will be out, be patient, they said. I used to give a lot of money to police officers, so they treated me well. But I cannot do anything about Mounties. The war stuff was Mounties’ job, not the city police’s. The city police let me hide but I was no match for the Mounties.
When I went to Oakalla others were playing around, but I don’t like playing. I cut underwear and dresses into these small pieces, patchworked them, and knitted floor rugs. Others don’t work. I liked doing it, so I worked. Then we sent them to Red Cross. I worked every day for three months and got some money! Hahaha. They gave me 10 cents per day. 3 yen. For my labour. Oh, I don’t need money, I said. I cannot accept it, right? I don’t need it, no, I said, but they squeezed the money into my purse. Hahaha.
I was in the jail for six months. I was under a complicated circumstance, see? I used to give away money to deal with all the problems but some people didn’t accept money and were against me.
*Ketō（毛唐）, the hairy foreigner, is a derogatory term in Japanese referring to westerners.
そして商売して、ナインティンフォーティ、ナインティンフォーティワン（1991）までですよ。フォーティワンにもうあなた、ほったらかして、おっぽられましたんたい。あのー、反対っていうですよー、戦争ですものに。戦争が、ナインティンフォーティワンに戦争が始まったでしょうが。そんときにわたくしの財産みーっんな捨てて、おっぽられて、荷物もなんか、みーっんな、大事な道具はみーんな、預けとってやられましたよ。わたし何万円の品もんやられてますよ。荷物から着物から、いい着物からみんーっな、白人のうち預けて。白人の、なかなか、口の先とね、なんかな、顔はいいんだろうが、心は腐っとる。
そしてみんなね、うた歌って、なんですかあれ、蛍の光ですか。あれ蛍の光じゃない。蛍の光ですなあ、歌って、みんな別れましたで。泣いて、みんな。亭主のある人、みんななあ、散ぢればなれでしょ。亭主さんがみんなインターンメントキャンプに捕まえて送ってしまいますんじゃ。
ナインティンフォーティワンでしたよ。捕まえがきたから隠れたですよ。わたくしもやっぱりおったいですもん、バンクーバーに。ホテルに隠れましたよ。それをね、マウンティが二人にね、このシティの兵士が一人、女兵士が一人、３人で捕まえにきた、わたくしを。ちょうど寝とったときに捕まえられたですよ。そして、ジェイルにいれられたでしょー、行かんから。みんな移住だから、行かにゃんから。ウイスキーがね、スリーダース、６ドル５０センのウイスキーをね、スリーダース、トロンコいっぱい、ニュートロンコいっぱい。みーっんな取られてしまって。ダイヤモンドから指輪からみんな。
わたくしは、ジェイルに入れられたの。メインの角に入れられて、そこからオカラ（Oakalla）に入れられましたぞ、わしは。日本人はいませんよ。わたくし一人ですたい、日本人は。みんなよその国のもんばっかりでしょ。そしてから、ラジオで日本のことしましょー。はがゆうしてはがゆうして、わたくしは地団駄踏んどりましたよ、ジェイルで。しゃくでしょう。ジャップ、ジャップって言いましょう。シャラップ！って言いますの、わたくしは。私はね、癇癪持ちですから、ジャップって言われたらわしは胸糞が悪いですよ。ユー、毛唐じゃねえか、シャラップ！って言いますの。わたくしは怒るですのよ。
わしゃあ兵隊さんに向かって言ったですよ、ジャップって言うから。そしたらな、なんて言うか、わしに向かってって。そしたらな、探偵と友達が多いから、オーケー、ママ、ベリーケアフル、ドンセイダッ（don’t say that）ってな。わしについてくれますの。もうベリースーン（very soon）だからなって、がまんせいって、探偵が言います。そうやってわたくしはね、ポリスマンに、金をうんとつかませたから、みんなようしてくれました。（でも）マウンティにはかないませんたい。マウンティの役目だから、この戦争中は、シティのポリスの役目じゃないんです。（シティのポリスは）隠してくれますけど、マウンティにはかないません。
オカラに行ってよ、みんな遊んでますけどね、わたくしはね、遊ぶの嫌いですのよ。あの、下着やね、着物をね、これくらい切ってついでね、編みましたい、敷物を。フロアの敷物を。みんな仕事しませんの。わたくしは好きだからしましたんだ。それでレッドクロスにみんな送りますの。そしてね、スリーモンス（three months）ね、わし連日働いたからね、金くれた！ははは。一日テンセン（10 cents）ずつくれた。３円くれた。働いた金だって。えー、わしは金はいらん、言うたんですよ。もらうわけにいかんでしょ。どうせいらんもん、いらん、って。押し込んでくる、巾着の中に押し込んでくる。ははは。
（ジェイルには）６ヶ月ですよ。いろいろ事情があったんですよ、わたくしは、な。それはね、金払って、ペイ払って何もかも済まかしとるですけどな、やっぱり中には、金つかません人にはやっぱり反対がございますわい。
