I was arrested in 1941, put in jail, and then sent to Greenwood. Four years in the countryside of Greenwood. I lived in a house like this, like a hotel. Then, you know, they built a bed out of wood board for me. A single bed. A couple got a double bed. Out of board, board beds these were. I had a mattress, too. The bed came with a mattress. New one. These were all new ones, not old ones.
In Greenwood I made dandelion wine for everyone. I had people gambling at the back, you know. I bought the second floor of a narrow house, a single detached house. One room. Everybody was happy drinking and gambling. I caught a Mounty in Greenwood. I knew his mother and children from Duncan where I lived for one year when I came from Japan. They, that Mounty, were in Greenwood. This white man came to gamble. He could not fine me, because I was his friend. I have no education, but I am pretty smart.
You need sugar (to make dandelion wine). Brown sugar would do, white sugar would be fine too. I would carefully wash dandelions, put them with oranges and yeast, umm, fresh yeast that you use for baking, you put that. One after another, and then another, everybody was happy. I made two big cans (of wine). When this one is done, then serve the next. That’s how I made it and had people in the village drink it. Then came beer. I could not buy beer myself so I asked others to buy it. I couldn’t buy it, you know, during the war. Couldn’t buy drinks. So I trapped white people (to do it for me). Hard work, see? But you would have to give them a commission, see. I did things like that.
I went pick (dandelions) myself. Others made me go and make it. Well, no no, I did ask people (to go pick dandelions) when I was busy. I arranged some chocolates with a store. I bought chocolates and gave them out to kids, then they brought tons of dandelions back to me. I would then wash them clean and make the dandelion (wine) again. Chocolates for lots of dandelions. Kids brought them to me. They wanted candies.
Then always tea, I boiled water to have people drink green tea, they would drink beer, wine, and drink and eat anything. When they were hungry I made sandwiches, when they wanted rice I cooked rice and served ochazuke with pickles, I put pickles on the side, too. Any kinds, daikon, cabbages, and even karashina.* I let people eat them. I don’t like pickles so much, I don’t eat them myself.
I am a woman who doesn’t care about rice. So I would exchange twenty five pounds of rice with sugar. I prefer bread (to rice). I bought flour and bake breads myself. I bake buns and breads. They taste better when you bake them yourself. I copied how others made them. I was a farmer after all, so I buy (ingredients) cheap and made things on my own. There I learned how to make strawberry pies, jam, everything.
I didn’t want a boyfriend in such a place (Greenwood). I ran away from my boyfriend and came here, to Vancouver, I ran away, because I was scared. My boyfriend didn’t let me go so I asked the Mounty, you watch, and came out. (My boyfriend) said, “Don’t go to Vancouver.” He said don’t go but I didn’t like that. I don’t like being in the countryside. He was Japanese. He was penniless and I used all my money for him. I hate such a man.
*Karashina（からし菜）is a type of mustard.

グリーンウッドで、たんぽぽのワイン作って、みんなにな、うしろで博打打たせておったから、あなた。細（こま）いうちのな、一軒家のな、二階を買った。ひと土間。喜んでみんなが飲んで博打打って。グリーンウッドでな、マウンティをつかまえて。私日本から来たときダンカンに一年おって、そのお母さん、その子供知っとるんですよ。それがグリーンウッドにマウンティ来てましたよ。この白人が来ましょう、博打しに。マウンティがピンチすることできもん、わしを、わしが、フレンドだから、されんでしょう。（わしは）学問がないですけどよ、なかなかこれ冴えますの。
（たんぽぽのワインは、）シュガーがなかったらできませんよ。ブラウンシュガーでも良し、白いシュガーでもいい。たんぽぽ、きれいに洗って、たんぽぽ入れて、オレンジ、そしから、イースト、これこのー、フレッシュのイーストがございますよ、ブレッド作るイースト、あれを入れますんじゃ。交代、交代、交代で、みんななあ喜んで。こんなカンに二つ作りました。これを飲ませ終わったら、こっち。そして、作って飲ましよったですよ、私は、ビレッジの皆さんに。そしからビアも。ビアも人に頼んで買いますよ、自分で買えませんから。買いませんわよ、あなた、戦争中は。飲むもんも買えませんもん。白人捕まえて。なかなかあんた。そん代わりやっぱり、コミッションやらにゃ、な。そんなんもやりましたって。
（たんぽぽは）自分で取りに行きましたい。みんなが行かすから、みんなも作らすんですもん。そしたらね、ノーノー、人に頼みましたい、わしが暇がなかった時は。ストアにチョコレートを頼んでおくの。チョコレートを買うて、チョコレートをやったらね、子供がみんなたんぽぽうんととってきてくれる。それをな、きれいに洗いますの、洗ってまたたんぽぽ（ワイン）を作りますの。チョコレートでなあ、子供がたんぽぽなんてしきりに持ってくれましょう。キャンディもらおうってな。
そしていっときも、お茶、お湯沸かして飲ませる、グリンチ（green tea）沸かして飲ませる、ビア飲む、ワイン飲む、なんでも飲んだり食った。そしたら腹減ったらサンドイッチしてやる、ご飯が欲しかったらご飯炊いてお茶漬け、漬物で、漬物もつけてましたし、わし。なんでも、大根でもキャベツでもね、芥子菜でも漬けてましたよ。それを食わすの。わたしはあんまり漬物好かん。あんまり漬物食べませんよ、わたくし。
わしはお米はどうでもいい女だから。だからお米トワンティファイブパンド（25 pounds）でシュガー買いますの。わしは、パンですから。ブレッドはね、粉買うてね、自分で焼きますの。バンズ、ブレッド、自分で作りますよ。おいしいわよ、自分で作ったほうがおいしいですよ。みんな作りなおるから真似して作って。やっぱり百姓だから、安いから買うて、自分で作りますたい。ストロベリーパイ、ジャム作って、なんやかんや、そこで覚えましたたい。
わたしゃボーイフレンドいらんわな、あんなとこで。わしゃボーイフレンドで逃げてきたの、ここ、このバンクーバーに逃げてきたんです、怖いから。ボーイフレンド邪魔するから、マウンティに、ユーウォッチ（you watch）って言って出てきた女ですたい。バンクーバー行くなって言うんですよ。行くなって言うけど私は嫌いですよ。田舎におるの嫌いですよ。（ボーイフレンドは）日本人の人。金一文もなくて、わしが金ばっか遣って、そんな人嫌い。
