Each of these houses was bought by business owners at between 25,000 to 30,000 dollars. Of course they do not pay all at once and they must have expected that they would be able to run their business for a sufficient period such as one or two years. This also allows us to imagine how easily they earn money. According to our source, #510 cost an initial payment plus a monthly payment of 1,500 dollars. All of these businesses take housing costs out of their operations. So where does these owners’ income come from? Now we need to talk briefly about their business standing.
How to Make Profit
For the first while after the caves were launched on January 23, half of their time was occupied with finishing up carpentry work. Once that was done, they did their best to welcome lecherous fellows in. In the beginning they prospered pretty well and most women earned at least forty-five dollars each night. Lately, because of the issue, which you know of*, their businesses fell and each woman is making twelve or thirteen dollars. These numbers all refer to prostitutes but madams make profit from prostitutes’ per diem and, in addition, from selling alcohol.
As I mentioned above, in the beginning prostitutes were thriving and earning forty-five dollars per night, and back then madams charged them seven dollars for per diem. But now they dropped the charge to five dollars. However, the prostitutes are still gaining about fifty dollars of income on Saturday nights and Sunday nights today. Five dollars of per diem from each person amounts to roughly one-hundred-fifty dollars per month, which tells us that the madams’ income is not low at all. In addition, they can expect profit from selling alcohol. Indeed, the fact they are selling alcohol does not mean that they are licensed. They do so under what we might call secret authorization or authorized secret: twenty-five cents for a small glass, a dollar for a small bottle of champagne, a dollar for a small bottle of beer, two dollars for a large bottle of beer… Of course, they can make profit; it would be too strange if they could not. And yet madams are concerned with whether they can get customers who drink that much alcohol. But fortunately, customers who come to these places do not tend to be solemn and sincere members of temperance. Two out of three times they would drink even reluctantly if they are asked. There are indeed many who would pull wads of bills from their meager pockets for a bottle of wine, without being asked, and cajole women. They are not treated respectfully, going to these places. Being fools among fools, big fools indeed, they empty their pocket. They are insane.
Alcohol makes sales of twenty-five dollars per prostitute on average, and of course, per night, which amounts to one-hundred-twenty-five dollars of profit per night if there are five women.
