Backgrounds of Prostitutes (cont’d)

There is a good example of those who were deceived and brought from Japan. This is also a miserable case.

There is a prostitute called Okiyo, 17 or 18 years old, who is currently at Terada’s cave in Nelson but used to work in Calgary. Two or three years ago, a devil called Yamazaki, who had been in this country for a long time, got involved with a prostitute who was working in Seattle for a few years, and left for Japan. As they had 1,000 or 2,000 dollar cash in their pocket, they first went to Tōkyō and had an entertaining life there but this did not last for a long time. Their pocket became lighter so they planned to return to this country to make some money by bringing a woman. Because he was from Shizuoka, they visited there to recruit a woman.

Then good news fell into their laps—Okiyo, a student and a daughter of a wealthy man called Mikawaya in Kanbara, is wishing to go to America to study. Yamazaki already knew Mikawaya so he visited them right away and made a proposal. Mikawaya did not even dream of the fact that Yamazaki was involved in prostitution business in this country, and he was easily manipulated. Yamazaki spouted nonsense that unlike in Japan a woman could easily get a job in Canada, that her English would improve in six months or one year if she studies aside from her work, and even that he would do his best to take care of her. Finally, he managed to bring her to this country and push her in his cave in Calgary.

No surprise, Okiyo cried in despair. However, once in devil’s hand a person has no option but stay in his power. Not knowing what was going on or having anyone to rely on, she could not step outside of the iron wall of the cave. Finally, she dropped her clean body deep into an abyss and became an irredeemable body.

Later Yamazaki opened a tea house in downtown Calgary, and following the strategy of Asami in Edmonton, gained income solely from prostitution. He preyed on Okiyo too.

The tea house is gone now and Okiyo moved to Jinkichi Terada in Nelson. But the building, which was previously used for Yamazaki’s tea house, stays there as it used to be and in the last summer it was used as a boarding house for boys, who work for Calgary’s best hotel, Alberta Hotel. The hotel used it for the boys’ temporary residence to deal with the increased volume of visitors during the summer. The boys are all Japanese.
