Calculation of Interests (Cont’d)
When she was in Three Valley, Oiwa used to set up a tent to work. She boldly settled in a place where Japanese people lived like that. Since Three Valley had a sawmill in which many Japanese engaged in labour, she immediately became popular and extorted as much money as she wanted. Later when the prostitute moved to Kelowna, one of the boys in Three Valley escaped from there after being involved in some conflict among the Japanese and was beaten up, and joined Oiwa to asked her to harbour him. Then a sawmill boss, who had fallen for Oiwa, came to Kelowna in search of her and was stunned to find another man at her place. This resulted in a violent gun shooting incident. Following this example there have been many Japanese workers in the interior, who were deceived by this prostitute who took Japanese clients. Apparently, there are even those who are cursing that they will beat the prostitute to death once they find her. Prostitutes bite the hand that feeds them and just leave. Instead of helping the workers settle in one place, they deceive men, who eventually start drinking and gambling in desperation and stop going to work. They are doomed.
Of course, the reader may already have been familiar with the man from Three Valley, who escaped to the prostitute’s place, but there is another man, who was in a secondary school and a medical school in Japan and has a more-than-average education, and still fell for this woman, fell into a pimp life himself, and opened his cave by taking her to Fernie. In fact, he was also engaged in labour at a nearby sawmill on the side, but he got involved in a conflict with his Japanese boss Takita over non-payment of salary. When that happened all the sawmill boys were as angry enough to pick the sky. This man had beaten up the boss’s brother, which caused a serious injury to his head and resulted in a court case. He was sentenced to five months in jail and sent to Nelson. However, this story is unrelated to the issue of taking Japanese clients and may not be a significant matter to discuss in calculating interests of caves. Anyway, to answer the question whether there is any benefit for the Japanese if those prostitutes deal with Japanese men, unfortunately I must say there is none. That would only produce trouble.
