Prostitute Kiyū in Gankirō, Yokohama
Kiyū is the daughter of something-Ōta, a town doctor in Tokyo. At a young age, Kiyū fell into the life of a yūjo (woman of pleasure, or prostitute) at her parents’ discretion. She then flew into Gankirō in Yokohama where she reached her golden age. A gentleman from the United States, who was a resident of Yokohama’s foreign settlement, was allured by Kiyū’s beauty, and negotiated with the owner of the house to become her client, for which he offered a large sum of money. The owner quickly accepted the gentleman’s proposal and brought it up with Kiyū. Kiyū rejected this arrangement, claiming that it goes against her original agreement which said she would not take on foreign clients. The owner continued to press her. Seeing no other options than to accept the arrangement, Kiyū committed suicide that evening, leaving behind a poem:
–Even a dewdrop of rain bothers Japanese prostitutes. I will not let the rain from America wet my sleeves.
Considering how westernized we have become over twenty years since this incident, we may think of her as extremely stubborn. She was a strong and firm woman that can rarely be found, indeed.

横濱岩亀楼の娼妓喜遊
喜遊は東京の町医者、太田なにがしの娘で、若年の頃、親のために遊女の身の上になり、流れ流れて横浜にある岩亀樓に行き着き、全盛となった。その頃、居留していたアメリカ人某氏が喜遊の容色に魅せられ、多額の金に代えて客になることを交渉した。楼主はこの件を安請け合いし、このことを喜遊に話す。が、元々外国人の客はとらないという約束だったので固く拒否すると、主人の威勢をもって何度も承諾を迫ってきたので、やむを得ず承諾した夜次、和歌一首を残して自害した。
露をだに いとふやまとの 女郎花 ふるあめりかに 袖はぬらさし （露にでさえ濡れることを嫌がる女郎花なのだから、降る雨に袖は濡らさない／アメリカ人の客を思って袖を濡らすようなことはしない）
これは二十年以上前のことで、現在の開化ぶりに比べると、たいそう頑なにも思われるが、また一方では稀なほど気丈でしっかりした女性でもある。
