In the 1970s, Sawako Ariyoshi re-interpreted Kiyū through a feminist lens and published the drama Furu Amerika ni Sode-wa Nurasaji (1970) and the novella The Death of Kiyū (1977). These stories are highly recommended for those who are interested in further examining how the story was re-narrated and transformed by a woman writer in a new political and cultural context. While these stories have not been translated into English as of 2022, Masako Ikenushi’s article provides an informed overview of Ariyoshi’s drama, as well as her critique of it.
