“The Tale of Kiyū–Texts, Print Media and Publishing in 19th Century Japan” by Saeko Suzuki

In this short lecture, Saeko Suzuki discusses how the Tale of Kiyū emerged and developed into different iterations in terms of publication format, genre, and content in the 1870s in response to the needs and interests of various social actors. In addition to the multiplicity and constructed nature of the story, you will also learn about how the old publication industry and culture from the Edo period continued to influence publication products in the early Meiji period.

    • How is Kiyū represented in Kinsei Kibun (1874)? How is the story shaped by the needs of the authorities, genre, expected readership, and author and illustrator’s styles?
    • How did the representation of Kiyū diverge from the one in Kinsei Kibun when the story was published in Hōkoku Yamato Damashii (1875) and then Harusame Bunko (1876)? What factors played a role in shaping these representations?
  3. Consider the following questions individually or with peers:
    • What does the lecture reveal about gendered processes of Japan’s encounter with the West, modernization, and nation-building? How do these gendered processes manifest across different representations of Kiyū and her death?
    • While retaining the basic plot and the historical and geographical setting, how would you narrate Kiyū’s story and why? What values would you incorporate into your version of the story?
