Read Against the Grain
Read the following quote from “Unsettling Memories of Japanese Migrant Sex Workers” (2021) written by Ayaka Yoshimizu, which suggests one way to read “Exploration of Devil Caves” critically (see “Additional Resources” in this module).
Osada generally disregards sex workers’ skills, intelligence and aspirations that allowed them to navigate their lives in the underground society. Women are almost always introduced as dependents or possessions of male “devils” and their autonomy is constantly negated. At the same time, there are moments in Osada’s storytelling where women’s agency becomes visible…In the series, women negotiate multiple levels of regulation through their everyday practices, which involve both individual, micro tactics—disguising identities, telling lies, hiding and disappearing—and intersubjective, organizational strategies—entering into the “devil network” and structure, occupying a powerful position and utilizing hierarchical, social relations. (p.39)

Draw Transpacific Networks
The characters who appear in “Exploration of Devil Caves” seem to be connected to the underground networks that extend beyond prefectural, provincial, national borders (of Japan and Canada).
Draw a map of the Pacific region and start connecting places with lines as you read the series.
For example, Ports of Vancouver or Victoria and Yokohama may be connected through the steamship routes for smugglers to “import” women from Japan to Canada. But places might also be connected by family relations.
